Job Description

Our team is involved in establishing the requirements, design, capacity, performance and resource planning, verification and operation of satellite communications networks for both civil and military customers. We are expanding our team and are seeking a versatile Senior Satellite Communications Systems Engineer to provide technical and commercial expertise to e2E’s customers. The candidate will be responsible for undertaking a variety of communications systems engineering tasks on advanced satellite communications networks and supported communications services. The successful candidate will benefit from interesting, varied, and challenging work. Ideally the successful candidate is expected to have acquired some specialisms and so will be expected to demonstrate experience of many – although not necessarily all – of the following skills and responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities will include some of the following:

  • System Design and Implementation: Collaborate with stakeholders, including business analysts, software developers, and network administrators, to design and implement reliable and scalable computer systems and infrastructure. Ensure that systems meet the technical requirements, performance goals, and security standards.
  • System Integration: Integrate various hardware and software components to ensure seamless interoperability and functionality of the system. Identify and resolve integration issues and collaborate with vendors or internal teams to implement appropriate solutions.
  • System Monitoring and Maintenance: Develop and implement monitoring solutions to proactively identify and address system issues, performance bottlenecks, and security vulnerabilities. Perform regular system maintenance tasks, including updates, patches, backups, and disaster recovery procedures.
  • Troubleshooting and Issue Resolution: Investigate and resolve complex system-related issues, working closely with the technical support team and other stakeholders. Troubleshoot hardware and software problems, perform root cause analysis, and implement effective solutions.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Create and maintain comprehensive documentation, including system configurations, installation procedures, troubleshooting guides, and standard operating procedures. Generate reports on system performance, capacity, and availability, and provide recommendations for improvements or optimizations.
  • Technology Evaluation and Recommendations: Stay abreast of emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices in system engineering. Evaluate new tools, frameworks, and technologies that can enhance system performance, reliability, and efficiency. Make recommendations for system upgrades or enhancements.

Skills, Character, and Experience

Essential
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working within Space/SATCOM in Defence, European or UK Space programmes or a similar field.
  • Degree educated in an Engineering discipline or professional experience demonstrating equivalent competence in the discipline may be acceptable.
  • Strong knowledge of system engineering principles, practices, and methodologies.
  • Experience of software-focussed development methodologies (i.e.: Agile, DevOps).
  • Understanding of satellite and terrestrial communications, including (but not limited to) the technologies, characteristics, limitations, etc.
  • Understanding of communication services and the key performance indicators that may be used to monitor them and verify the quality of service parameters.
  • Understanding of the management systems that may be used to monitor, configure and control communication services.
  • Understanding of satellite communications terminals, including (but not limited to) the technologies, characteristics, limitations, etc.
  • Experience in the development of communications system test strategy, plans and procedures, test execution ideally gained via a global satcom network provider; experience of planning and conducting test campaigns, collecting, and analysing data from tests, communicating results and anomalies to test management and the customer through both presentations and formal test reports.
  • Practical knowledge or working experience of systems engineering practices from requirements engineering through design/development and on to test and service release.
  • Currently holding, or capable of obtaining, UK SC clearance.
Desirable
  • Experience of software-focussed testing within satellite communication technologies / networks with an appreciation of satellite subsystems, systems engineering processes and operational environments.
  • Knowledge of test automation software (e.g.: Selenium, Cucumber, Gherkin) and experience in API testing, e.g.: unit, functional, load/performance testing, etc. (experience of iPerf, Wireshark).
  • An understanding of object-orientated programming techniques, ideally via the use of Java, C++ and/or scripting languages (e.g.: Python, Javascript, Bash, C-shell); the ability to work with abstract concepts and to express and communicate them through documentation; experience of using a variety of coding languages in different environments.
  • Knowledge of networking concepts (e.g.: TCP-IP/DNS/DHCP/routing/ICMP); familiarity with IP network design, protocols and security of data.
  • Experience of troubleshooting of network, RF signal connection and protocol problems, including identifying and solving problems and issues.
  • Experience with network challenges associated with systems integration, including COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) integration, capacity and performance analysis and system architecture design.
  • Skills necessary to evaluate network hardware, software, algorithms and processes to verify and characterise capability and performance.
  • Familiarity with OSS/BSS (Operations Support System / Business Support System) technologies and their use in management and reporting of communications networks.
  • Experience in assessment/development of security architectures in a communication systems and/or military communications networks.
  • Experience using relational databases.
  • Experience of version / source control systems.
